#HotLikeAMother : Meet Aberdeen Mums Turning Fashion Into Business

#HotLikeAMother is the new blog series created by Confidently Kylie that looks to break the barriers and expectations of Motherhood. Too often we hear that when you become a mother you must conform and sacrifice who you are and become the perfect picture of a frumpy, homemaking woman of the 50’s. But I call Bull Shit. Society’s expectations often brings mothers down. Making them feel like they are no longer relevant. At Confidently Kylie, we are here to bring mothers up and inspire mums to embrace their inner fire.

In this series I will be interviewing and getting to know some of the UK’s most kick ass mums. From inspiring boss babes, to stylish fashionistas, to just damn right inspirational mothers. All in the quest to encourage mums to go for their passions and be Hot Like A Mother…….

If you would like to be featured or know someone who should then please contact me at Kylie@ConfidentlyKylie.com

MEET OCTOBERS HOT MUMS

Two friends, two mumpreneurs taking their passion for fashion to a whole other level. Kate and Claire are the founders and owners of up and coming personal styling service Coveted Styling. When I first met Kate and Claire I was immediately drawn to the duo. Not only for their impeccable style but also for their down to earth “mumsyness”. Their friendly nature and relatable characters immediately put me at ease and I felt like I could discuss anything and everything with them over a cup of tea. I spoke to Kate and Claire about Fashion, being a mum and their business.

Fashion is definitely one of my passions too. What made you start Coveted Styling?

Kate: Our friendship developed very quickly when we discovered we were both obsessed with fashion. We used to spend a lot of time talking to each other about clothes. About what to wear to certain parties or events we had on, that hasn’t changed! Instagram played a big part in it as we started following other stylists, loved what they did for other women and so decided to go for it. We did a styling course with The Image Consulting Company in Bristol which was brilliant. We even registered Coveted Styling while we were there!
Claire : We were both at a time in our lives where we wanted to do something for us. I was on maternity leave and Kate’s boys were at school & Nursery. We wanted to do something we love, as well as helping other women to feel good about themselves.

Both of you are mums and seem to be juggling a lot.  How do you keep on top of running a business, looking stylish plus the everyday challenges of motherhood?

Kate: Sometimes I get to the end of the day and feel like I’ve achieved loads and other days I feel the total opposite!  So I do try to be organised, l make a list every night of what has to be done the next day. I try to plan my outfits the night before so it’s one less thing to worry about before the madness of the school run. Also having the school uniform ironed and ready to go every morning helps but doesn’t always go to plan! That way I feel slightly in more control!
Claire: I also work Part-Time, so for me organisation is key! I like to plan my week so everyone knows whats happening and when. However we both have a strong support network that helps us out.

So many mums find it difficult to find the time to look after themselves. What are your style tips to make being fashionable effortless and accessible?

Claire : Try not to overthink it, don’t worry about following particular trends. Invest in good quality wardrobe staples that make you feel good and can be worn with lots of other items in your wardrobe.
Kate: If you don’t want to spend lots of money on the new ‘on trend’ items we suggest choosing some accessories which can update your outfits in an instant. Leopard print is huge this season but some ladies are a bit scared of it. So you could start off small with a belt or bag and see how you feel. It’s a way to be on trend without going head-to-toe if you’re not sure. Belts are a great accessory to have in your wardrobe too, whether for jeans or a dress/skirt they can really add something extra with minimal effort.

High Street or High End?

Kate: We are both fans of both. The high street is amazing and gets better all the time in terms of quality and value for money. I do love high end things such as bags and shoes though for that little bit of luxury sometimes. But the high street is fab at creating their own versions making it very accessible.
Claire: I like to invest in key staple items such as handbags, shoes & Coats. But the high street is my go-to for every day style.

Where are your favourite places to shop?

Claire: We are big online shoppers as we love the comfort of our own homes. Plus it is more convenient for busy mums like ourselves. I love ASOS has it has the variety of brands, styles, price range, shoes & accessories. I also love Topshop & Warehouse
Kate: ASOS like Claire, as they have so much and you can often buy a whole outfit from there. Their next day delivery is fab! River Island is my go-to for footwear and I love Zara and New Look for their on trend pieces without spending a fortune. But I also really love finding new brands and boutiques on instagram, buying things you maybe wont get in the normal places.

Confidently Kylie is all about being Confidently You. How do you stay confident and true to yourself when us mums tend to do everything for everyone else?

Claire : Make up! Not a full face, but a bit of concealer and highlighter to cover the eye bags! I also have short hair, so I like to make sure I give it a good blow dry.  I don’t have the ease of popping it up in a Mum bun!
Kate: We have days when we don’t always feel good about ourselves. Especially if i’m a rush to get out of the house or everything is going wrong! I love make up like Claire but the one thing I can’t go without is having my nails and toes done regularly. I’ve also got back into exercise recently and  it’s definitely something that gives me a boost of confidence and makes me feel good about myself!

What advice would you give to mums who feel like they have lost themselves in the whirlwind of motherhood?

Claire : Just having some me time is important, so when you get the chance you should take it! I think it’s important to take time out to do things which you did before becoming a mummy. For me that is spending time catching up on my favourite blogs, or going into town and having a look around the shops.
Kate: Try and do some of the things you did before becoming a mum. Things that always seemed so simple but not so easy now! But also just enjoy it. Now both my boys are at school I’ve realised how quickly the time has gone and I’m kind of missing the whirlwind!!

Last but not least, What are your go to style items and why?

Claire: I have about 10 variations of a Breton top in my wardrobe! I can’t get enough… they are perfect for Mum days. Can be dressed up with a maxi skirt over the weekend or pop a blazer over it. Or why not over jeans and a heel for a smarter feel. It’s a wardrobe staple which will always be in style.
Kate: My go to style items can vary quite a lot but I do like anything that can be worn every season. I just change how I wear them. In summer I lived in shirt dresses, I have quite a few from New Look! They are so easy and comfy to wear. I can carry on wearing them throughout autumn/winter with ankle boots and my leather biker jacket. But I am also a massive fan of a shacket, slogan t-shirt, cropped jeans and sneakers for everyday running about. The one thing that never changes is my obsession with cross-body handbags as they go with everything in my wardrobe!

How To Wear Leopard Print Without Looking Tacky

Most of you have probably seen that leopard print is all the rage right now. It is the hit trend of autumn and everyone seems to be wearing it. I remember when it started to resurface in the fashion world a few years ago.   Either you looked extremely high fashion, like someone out of a magazine. Or you looked tacky. However over the years the animal print phenomenon has grown on me and I have found myself being attracted to it more and more. My first purchase was a pair of leopard print ballerina pumps which eventually turned into a vast array of tops, dresses and skirts. So when I saw that the print was back this autumn I was delighted and thought I would share with you some tips on How To Wear Leopard Print Without Looking Tacky.

Not All Prints Are The Same

The secret to not looking tacky while adopting the leopard print trend is to choose your prints and colours wisely. The first print that comes to mind when I think Leopard print is the horrible yellow prints of the 80’s. Not a good look. But now fashion houses and material designers have expanded the animal print repertoire and there are now a lot of prints that are softer and more refined. Do your research. You will see what prints look best and what don’t. I personally prefer to go for greys or pastel type colours as opposed to bright ones.

The Blouse

You cannot go wrong with a printed blouse or jumper. A blouse or jumper is so easy to pop on and can go with a pair of jeans for a more casual look. Or with a pair of chic trousers or maxi skirt to look more sophisticated.

Top Picks

The Leopard Printed Dress

leopard print

I bought my very first leopard print dress from Mango about 9 years ago. I was working in a French Fashion House at the time and wanted to look the part at our Christmas Event. It was an above the knee grey leopard print dress that was cinched at the waist and loose on the top. I was so nervous as it was a bold choice for me at the time.  I will never forget the feeling of elation when one of the senior managers who was the fashion icon at the time came up to me and asked where the dress was from because she loved it.

The shape and style of the dress plays a huge role. A short tight body con dress in a bright coloured leopard print might look good on some. But definitely not on me. I like to choose dresses with more flow such as a maxi or tea dress.

Top Pick

The Maxi Skirt

I am obsessed with maxi skirts at the moment. They are so easy to wear yet super stylish and perfect for the summer autumn transition. Plus they suit any body type. The skirt below is not actually a skirt but a dress that I covered with a plain black jumper. The skirt I really wanted has been sold out for the last week.

Accessorize

And if all else fails, accessorising is the easiest way to stay in trend. Add a cute thin leopard print belt to your jeans. Or pop on a pair on leopard print pumps or booties to make a statement. Or of course the easiest option is to go for a leopard print scarf. Either way adding that little pop of colour and print will make your outfit stand out.

Whatever way you choose, wear whatever makes you comfortable and makes you feel good in your body. Nothing is more attractive than feeling good in your skin. So do what is best for you and you will shine.

The Mum Bod Saviour : Bodysuits

The Mum Bod. Oh I had been warned about how my body would change after having kids. “Your body changes its shape completely” I would hear. ” Even if you lose all the weight you will never be the same”. I took all of these warnings with a pinch of salt, I was going to lose the weight and I was going to be skinnier and fitter than ever after having my baby. Little did I know what was ahead of me.

Two years on and I still find that I am too scared to look at myself in the mirror. My previous love of tight body con dresses has had to be put on standby. How am I ever going to look somewhat attractive with these extra wobbly bits protruding from places I didn’t even know they could protrude from?

One word my lovely ladies……….

BODYSUITS

Don’t be fooled by their hip hugging appearance. Bodysuits for me (and for a lot of other mums I know) are my mum bod saviour! Though they appear to be tight and revealing they are actually extremely complimentary to your figure. They give you the “V” Shape, essentially making your hips and stomach appear smaller. Think Baywatch, though the women were beautiful in their own right. It was later revealed that it was the swimsuits V shape design that gave them the much wanted hourglass look. I feel it secures my softer bits in place, making me look smoother and thinner in the process. It is like a comfortable everyday version of spanx.

SHOP THE BASICS

I now have a huge range of bodysuits in my wardrobe. Ranging from basic t-shirts, vests and singlets to the more fashionable looks such as cold shoulders, meshed etc. You can find bodysuits just about anywhere ranging from 5£ (Boohoo) to up in the £1000’s (Balmain). I personally love House of CBwho make some of the best basic bodysuits as well as some very fashionable statement ones.

The Mum Bod

Now you know my wardrobe secrets! Hope they help you feel more confident in your body.

Even though they may be wobbly in places, these bodies brought our prefect little humans in to the world. And for that they are amazing, no matter what shape!

How To Wash Your Make Up Brushes (And Not Have To Wait Days For Them To Dry)

With Christmas and New Years Parties I must admit that my make up brushes have taken a beating in the last few weeks. They have been covered and recovered in foundation, eyeshadows, lip shades, concealer and then packed into a tight make up bag. As well as been the cause of many tanned coloured stains on my pouches and table tops!

make up brushes

If you are anything like me than washing your brushes is not something you enjoy. The process of takes time and waiting for them to dry properly before using them again can be excruciating.

Putting that aside, it is essential that your brushes are washed regularly and properly. Besides the obvious reasons of hygiene, reusing dirty brushes can make your make up look amateur, no matter how skilled you are. And don’t forget the damage it can cause to your brushes! ( which must I say, they are pretty expensive so you don’t want to have to keep buying them).

So I thought i would share with you my cleaning routine which has been a game changer for me and my brushes.

When to wash

I try to wash my brushes at least one a week. Especially my foundation and concealer brushes. As they tend to have the most residue on them, making them a breeding ground for bacteria. I make it a Sunday ritual along with my weekly face mask and exfoliation.

How to wash

Using my finger tips and nails to get deep into the bristles. I dab a drop of shampoo with some water and gently clean in between the bristles. Depending on how dirty the brushes are, I usually repeat this process until the water runs clear and the brush starts to go back to its natural colour.

make up brushes

Drying them

Once the brush is properly clean, it is time to dry them. Since finding this method, this is my favourite part of the process. I used to hate drying them as it would 1. take ages for them to dry and 2. Risk damaging them if not done properly.

Using a hair tie, I tie the brushes bristles down on to my towel rack. This allows them to drip dry without any water seeping into the glue at the base and potentially damaging it. A bonus is that my towel rack is heated so it dries faster and evenly, and are usually ready to go the next morning.

make up brushes

Quick Tip : If you wear a full face of make up almost every day then washing once a week may not be enough. So I bought an anti-bacterial daily brush spray that i use throughout the week. Just spray it over the bristles and wipe with a tissue. This should ensure that there is not too much residue sitting on your brush for a week!

There you have it. I hope this helps!!

Kids Style : Navy Duffle Coat And High Top Trainers

It all started when we were running behind schedule. We were to drive down to Edinburgh for one of our friends daughters birthday party and as usual we were running late. As I scampered around the house trying to get everything together, I felt the stress rising. I needed to get Gabriel dressed and fed, pack his and my own bag, get my self ready, wash my hair and do my make up. SIGH!

The thing is when you have a young child you cannot just pack a few outfits and thats it. You need to bring the whole house! In addition to outfits and spare outfits in cases of leaking nappies or food spills. Its bottles, bibs, snacks, milk, nappies and toiletries. I was cursing myself for not preparing everything the night before. After a few mad dashes, I finally got the last things together while my husband strapped Gabriel in the car. Are we ready? He asked. Yes I replied and off we went to spend the weekend in Edinburgh.

We would usually do the whole 2 and a half hour journey in a oner, but that was no longer an option now with Gabriel who needs to kick his legs and have some food. We stop off and go to unstrap our baby out of the car. Where are his shoes? “I thought you packed them” I said to my husband. “I thought you did” he replied. FUUUUUUUUUCK!

We had forgotten Gabriel’s shoes! Luckily for us there was a Tesco nearby. What was a “quick buy any shoe” situation. Ended up being the day we found one of our favourite pairs. They have become his go to shoes along side his clarks, and he loves them.

With the weather getting colder, they go really well with this duffle coat from John Lewis. He has a few coats for different occasions but this one is by far our favourite. It is so stylish yet casual, and makes him look like a mini adult. Here is his outfit during one of our outings.

Stay Motivated At The Gym With These Awesome Gym Outfits

Hooray! After much discipline and planning, I am finally down to my pre baby weight. I am very chuffed with myself but I still cannot believe it has taken me a year and a half to reach this goal. I had originally thought it was going to take only 4 months! Haha I guess I overestimated my willpower capacity. GREATLY! Check out my post on how I lost 2.5 kgs at home while looking after my little one

Nonetheless I have reached it and am I glad that I will not be rolling down the aisle next month. Although I have no completely reached my goal. I am currently working towards my pre Scotland weight and then I will be satisfied with myself. You read correctly. I put on weight when I moved to Scotland. As much as I love Scotland with its beautiful scenery and its friendly alcohol loving people. It has wreaked havoc on my waistline with its cold weather and yummy yet fattening comfort foods

Fish and Chips, Curry, Sunday roasts and as of course the Deep fried mars bar. No wonder I put on 4 kilos. As disgusting as a deep fried mars bar sounds, you will be surprised to know that it is absolutely delicious!

So with only 4 weeks to go until I walk down the aisle I need some serious motivation to kick these last kilos to the curb. For me having good flattering workout gear has always been a good motivator. I don’t know why exactly but I find that if I feel and look good in any aspect of my life. I always tend to put in more effort to make my life better.

So I have been on the hunt for some good workout gear to get me through these last 4 weeks of intense workouts and thought I would share with you some of my favourites.
