It surprises me that a lot of people do not know much about probiotics and its benefits to our health and over all well being. When most people think of the term probiotics, they immediately think of yogurt. But what are probiotics? And why are they essential?
Probiotics are live bacteria that live in our gut. Sounds boring I know, but wait. Without these healthy little creatures, we would not be able to function. Probiotics help to absorb nutrients from food and boost the immune system to fight off any diseases that may be attacking the body. This is huge considering that 80% of our immune system comes from our gut!
Unfortunately for us in this modern world with high antibiotic and processed food consumption. Our average probiotic count is not tip top. Which means that our immune systems are not as strong and resilient as they should be.
The benefits of having good bacteria in your gut are extensive. Research has proven that a healthy gut full of good bacteria can improve digestion and nutrient absorption, Treat skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis, improve the immune system and lead to weight loss.
New studies have found that our gut is not just for digesting food, but it is like a second brain. It is the second largest part of out neurological system and it has been said that a healthy gut can improve depression and even help fight cancer cells. So how do you increase your probiotic count?
Eat more probiotic rich foods
Fermented foods such as sauerkraut, kimchi and kombucha are high in good bacteria. Another good and easy alternative is Apple Cidar Vinegar. Use this vinegar on salads or add a teaspoon to a glass of water and drink every morning.
Another good source is yogurt and kefir, which is a fermented milk drink. I personally try to stay away from yogurt or diary. (To see why I refuse to cows milk and dairy please see my post here) But I often eat coconut yogurts and kefir.
Take a good quality probiotic supplement everyday
As the benefits of probiotics have become more known it is very easy to get hold of a good quality probiotic supplement. When purchasing a probiotic make sure that there are different strains. Not all good bacteria are the same. You need to make sure that you have several different types in order to benefit from them completely.
I give an infant probiotic to my son after a course of antibiotics and when he is sick. We have found that he was constantly catching things from Nursery and Playgroup. Since giving him probiotics he seems a lot more resilient.
With all of the studies showing the benefits of probiotics and good gut bacteria it is worth adding fermented foods to your diet and investing in a good supplement.
